STEMulating Summer 2021

The UL Lafayette Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) is planning for a STEMulating Summer 2021. With its new Region 4 STEM Network Center, CEE has planned for an engaging summer for K-12 students, teachers, and STEM majors.

STEMulating Summer 2021 goals include:

  • Engage more than 500 students with STEM activities through summer camps.
  • Provide at least 50 teachers with STEM-related professional development.
  • Provide at least $30K in stipends to teachers involved in professional development.
  • Provide at least $27K in stipends to STEM and Education majors this summer.

Specific activities associated with STEMulating Summer 2021 include the following camps and professional development.

CSI: Mystery Camp

The Advancing Mathematics (& Science) Camp is proud to present a "CSI Mystery" theme for its Summer 2021 experience. Campers will investigate a mock crime scene throughout the week while engaging in fundamental chemistry, biology, physics, and forensic sciences. Additional mysteries will also integrate math and science FUNdamentals.

Camp cost is free due to funding obtained by UL Lafayette's Dr. Peter Sheppard through the National Science Foundation and the Louisiana Board of Regents.

NASA Astro Camp

CEE partners with Central Creativity, NASA, LPSS, VPSB, and St. Landry Parish Schools for this camp. The camp aims to have students engage students in grade-appropriate activities designed by NASA. Participants will “train like an astronaut,” and participate in “out of this world” activities.

Mathematics and Science College Readiness Camp

Get a jump start on learning critical concepts for success in Freshmen Mathematics Courses: College Algebra (MATH 103, 104, or 105); Pre-Calculus Algebra (MATH 109), Pre-Calculus Trig (MATH 100), or Calculus (Math 270). The overarching project objective for the Freshmen Outreach & Mathematics Enrichment (FOrME!) Math & Science Summer College Readiness Experience: UL Lafayette/LPSS GEAR-UP Partnership is to provide college freshmen with two weeks of academic support, in mathematics and science, from UL Lafayette faculty and UL Lafayette upperclassmen to help them to transition to college-level coursework.

Mathematics and Science Teacher Professional Development

Exploring Mathematics, Science, and Diversity Topics through Sharing, Enhancing, and Cross Cutting. This PD is centered on four core components: Empowerment, Networking, Vertical Cross-cuts and Horizontal Cross-Cuts. Participating teachers will recieve a stipend up to $500. Participants are also expected to comply with all UL Lafayette COVID-19 safety protocols.
